The Berrypickers
Today a book dropped through my letterbox. I was expecting it and at the same time anticipating seeing what it was like. The book is Local Heroes – A History of Senior and Junior Football in Blairgowrie and Rattray. Now you won’t find this on any Amazon best sellers list or any other list that has the latest Katie Price book or Gordon Ramsay cookbook because thats isn’t where it belongs – its a book that has its roots in Blairgowrie and Junior football and most likely will be read by people with a foot in one or the other camps. That being said it is well put together by Martin Mackay who has spent the last few years researching its history to create a book which is informative as well as a bloody good read. Starting back in the 1930s when Junior football was in its infancy and travelling through its days when they came up against Glasgow Rangers to the present day with its current crop of players, management and commitee members happy to be associated with the Blairgowrie Juniors name.
I also have the honour of having a few of my images in the book.
The book is available by emailing Martin at martin@blairgowriejfc.co.uk
Although I have only photographed Blairgowrie a few teams I have always found it to be a ground I found exciting to visit. It alway felt like big game day there. I have had the privilage to witness them win the league title and compete in the Scottish Junior cup against the Clydebank. These were both great games. Blairgowrie are a team who give their all and a club who always make you feel welcome. This is one of the reasons I enjoy shooting Junior football. Here are some of my favourite images from my days there.
I love this picture because of the little boy in Blair strip in the background caught up in his own goal celebration.
Some recent sports images
Its been a while since I posted some sports images as I have been concentrating on wedding and portraits. Despite this sports/press is still a large part of my photographic work and I spend most Saturday afternoons shooting images for the the Evening Telegraph or Courier. As we have moved into the winter it become more dificult as you are constantly competing against falling light with most of today spent shooting at ISO1600 or ISO 3200 to acheive a usable shutter speed. Maybe next year I will buy a MarkIV and not be too worried about this.
Here are some images from the last 5 or 6 weeks that have been used in the papers.
Football images from this week
Some images from the Junior and Amateur matches I shot on Saturday for the Evening Telegraph. Kinnoull v Luncarty and Jeanfield Swifts v Errol.
